Endangered species in Ontario are under threat by Bill 5
The beautiful natural landscapes that Hazel loves are in danger. Ontario residents, we need to come together to mobilize against Premier Doug Ford's detrimental Bill 5, the Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025 to protect the Endangered Species Act and preserve our democracy.
Wishing Hazel a happy 8th birthday!
Hazel is sweet as the biggest piece of birthday cake! I was in Orlando, Florida attending the VMX 2023 Veterinary Conference and spent a week away from Hazel. It really makes you appreciate your pets more when you are separated from them. I missed her so much. I returned to Canada just in time to celebrate the most asymmetrical Saint Bernese's 8th birthday!
Hazel has defied all the odds and made it past age five. She is happy and healthy, and despite her injury and frequent health problems, she remains in fantastic shape. She is a genuine underdog. Hazel has taught me a valuable lesson: Folks may underestimate me, but as long as I never give up and keep a positive attitude, I'll beat the odds and surprise them all! It's one of the many lessons she has taught me in the past eight years that I've been blessed to call her MY dog.

It's always nice to be appreciated! It has been such an exciting year for Hazel and me. We are celebrating the 10th anniversary of Paws For Reaction. To make us feel extra special, the folks at DeliveryRank interviewed me about Paws For Reaction: the past, present and future of my Ottawa dog blog.
Paws for a cause: We stand with the people and pets of Ukraine- and so can you!
Watching the tragedy in Ukraine unfold has been gutwrenching, and it is impossible to ignore. The people of Ukraine are suffering from an unjust attack. Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, has launched an illegal assault on the people of Ukraine, and his war has gone on far too long. It's day 70 of the war in Ukraine. People- and their pets- are suffering daily and many Canadians desperately want to help. I'm feeling hopeful today because I can share an inspiring initiative with all of my animal-loving readers that will help Ukraine's pets in need and support the veterinarians who are working hard to keep those pets safe and healthy.
Keira's legacy: Remembering Keira on her home day
The day I brought Keira home was one of the happiest days of my life. This year marks the 10 year anniversary of Paws For Reaction. It breaks my heart that I made it to this milestone without her head resting on my knee and her droopy eyes looking up at me as I type this.
Seven years a senior: Happy 7th birthday to Hazel the Saint Bernese
There's nothing I love more than seeing joy spark across Hazel's overly expressive face. Today, Hazel's birthday is one of her most joyful days of the year, and therefore, one of her most expressive. This year I'm isolating, so we couldn't go on one of our birthday adventures. I still spoiled her with many gifts, which is her favourite part anyway. This year she has earned the title of being my 'old lady dog' like Keira did before her.
Remembering an unforgettable dog: It's been a year since we said goodbye to Keira
I read a quote recently that resonated with me. It said, "Grief does not shrink, we expand to accommodate it." The hole that Keira left in my life (and in Hazel's life) is as large as it was a year ago, but Hazel and I have grown to accept that it will always be there. On July 13, 2020, I made the difficult decision to euthanize my sweet, beloved Keira. Even though it was the right thing to do because she was suffering from an unknown illness (possibly gastric cancer) I had a hard time letting her go. I remember being in total disbelief. It's hard to believe a year has gone by already.
Pandemic Paddy's Day: Wishing you a safe and happy St. Patrick's Day!
Hazel and I wish you a safe and happy St. Patrick's Day! We urge you all to be mindful of Covid-19 restrictions. I know how much we all want to get out and dance a jig and drink green beer, but we are a community and we need to keep each other safe. This hasn't been a very lucky year, but we are hoping there is a pot of gold at the end of this pandemic rainbow. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
Do you have a story to tell? Share your story on Paws For Reaction
This year more than ever, I've been providing an outlet for people in the community to share their stories. I've teamed up with some wonderful and interesting guest bloggers, interviewed experts in their fields, and supported different organizations. I want to keep expanding upon that. That being said, Paws For Reaction is looking for new guest bloggers!

I'm going on hiatus! One week one the water, then another week spent with friends. No wifi, no work, no rules. And sadly, no Keira. I've been looking forward to my week at the cottage since COVID-19 hit. It's been one of the only things that has got me through this pandemic. But as much as I want to go to the cottage, it won't be the same without Keira, and all the other family dogs we have lost this year. 2020 has been a devastating year for pets in my family.
It's transformation time! This month I asked my Paws peeps to send in Before & After photos of their pets! Grooming, growth, weight loss- no transformation was off-limits. You didn't disappoint! Check out these adorable Before & After photos! Thank you for your submissions and stay tuned for next month's feature!
Yesterday I lost my best friend, Hazel lost her big sister and the world lost a gentle soul. I had to make the difficult and sad decision to say goodbye to Keira. Keira was so much more than the dog I used for photos and testing products on Paws For Reaction. She was the first dog I ever owned and a huge member of our family. She was the love of my life. She had a long and happy life, and I was so fortunate that she spent most of it in perfect health. Sadly, she became very ill, very fast, and she didn't deserve to be in pain.
Everything has changed since Canada- and the rest of the world- has been hit with the coronavirus pandemic. While COVID-19 positive trends are decreasing in Ottawa, it is still really important to practice social and physical distancing. This makes traditional Canada Day celebrations difficult or impossible. Many patriotic Canadians are thinking outside the box when it comes to celebrating the True North on July 1st, 2020. Here are some ways you can have a safe and healthy Canada Day during the pandemic.
This month Paws For Reaction is celebrating 8 years! I'm so excited for the next chapter of my blog and am looking forward to lots more fun and informative content. For many of my longtime readers, you will have noticed a change to the blog. For my newer readers, I'd like to fill you in!
