The month of May features many pet related holidays and awareness weeks

Photo by Cia de Foto Foter.com CC BY

The first week of May is National Pet Week making May just as much fun as April was for pet parents. The month of May pays tribute to our furry family members with many pet related holidays and awareness weeks.

Spend some extra time snuggling up with your pets for the second week of May which is Be Kind to Animals Week. Some pet parents are making donations to humane societies and animal rescue shelters to raise awareness for the ethical treatment of animals. Don’t forget to donate to charities that train, foster and support service dogs. And don’t forget never to pet a service dog or a service dog in training.

PRESS RELEASE
By Mike Sagman via Dog Food Advisor

April 30, 2013 – Great Life Performance Pet Products has notified its distributors to request they withhold certain products from sale to consumers.
According to the company, the action is being taken because some packages are “not reaching full expiration date” as suggested by the presence of an unexplained odor.
The affected dog food products include:
§  Great Life Grain Free Buffalo
§  Dr. E’s Grain Free Buffalo
In its letter, Great Life assures distributors recent lab tests have found their Grain Free Buffalo products “free of Salmonella, E. coli, toxins, micro-toxins, etc.”.
Our Opinion
Although Great Life is investigating the cause of the problem, it’s important to note the company has not yet technically classified its action “a recall”.
However, it’s always possible some of the affected product may have already made its way to end users.
Since the company has not yet determined the actual cause of the odor, we feel compelled to make consumers aware of the situation and suggest they monitor the developing story closely.

It is in a dog’s nature to travel. Saint Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. In artwork created in early Christian times he was sometimes depicted with a dog’s head. Man’s best friend on the road!

Summer activity guide: what you need to know before swimming with your dog

Internal Server Error Foter.com CC BY-NC-ND
With the summer months soon approaching pet parents are getting excited for some fun in the sun with their canine companions. When the weather gets hot you may be tempted to take a dip with your dog but before you take the plunge make sure you know your safety rules- and know your pet.

Swimming and other water play with your dog can be a bonding experience for you both. It can also keep both you and your dog in shape and provide relief from the hot summer sun. Whether you go to a swimming destination or are just swimming in the backyard pool it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Resilient companion: once facing extinction the Bernese Mountain Dog lives on

Photo by Ju Muncinelli Foter.com CC BY-NC

The sweet but powerful Bernese Mountain Dog- also known as the Berner Sennenhund- is one of four Swiss mountain dogs. But the Berner stands apart from the other Swiss canines in that it is the only one with a long, silky and flowing coat. It also almost didn’t make it out of the 19th century alive.

If your guinea pig jumps straight up and down don’t be alarmed- it is a move called “popcorning.” Guinea pigs only do this move if they are really excited or happy. So next time you catch your guinea pig “popcorning” get excited and popcorn with him!

Robust and regal, Great Danes and Mastiffs are as tough as they look. In the middle ages these big breeds were sometimes suited with armour and spiked collars and were brought into battle. Some even suited up to guard supply caravans!

Summer activity guide: what you need to know before hiking with your dog

Hiking can be a great way to bond with your dog and stay in shape. Parks and trails are very stimulating for a dog and hiking is a great way to get back to nature together. But precautions must be taken so that your pooch does not hurt himself or any other wildlife you may encounter along the way.

Start with the basics. First you must determine that your dog is physically capable of taking the hike. If you have any worries or doubts about your pet consult your veterinarian. It is not recommended that you take a puppy under 18 months out for this type of activity. Secondly and most importantly be sure your pet is up to date on all vaccinations and medication to prevent fleas, ticks, ear mites, worms and all other parasites. Thirdly make sure your dog has proper identification- whether its tags or microchip- just in case the two of you get separated. It’s better to prepare for emergencies ahead of time and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

You’ve heard the phrase “it’s raining cats and dogs.” This quirky, clichéd remark originated in seventeenth-century England. During heavy rainstorms stray animals would drown and could be seen floating down the streets making it look as though it had been “raining cats and dogs.” Disturbing!
