Easter lily is a beautiful gift but is deadly for cats

Easter is a wonderful holiday to celebrate with family- pets included. Like so many other holidays the celebration can unintentionally pose a threat to a cat or dog. One common Easter gift is lethal to cats and symptoms can show up in as little as six hours.

The spring celebration usually involves chocolate that can be a deadly treat for a dog. Something else to consider is the Easter grass that lines the bottom of most Easter gift baskets. It can create dangerous intestinal damage if ingested by a dog or cat, resulting in expensive vet bills.

Puppy play biting: How to teach a teething puppy not to bite

It is a painful problem that every puppy owner faces: play biting. Puppy owners are far too familiar with the feeling of an adorable fuzzy puppy clamping on to their sensitive skin with those tiny, deadly and razor-sharp puppy teeth. But play biting is a natural thing for a puppy- she is trying to use her mouth to learn about the world around her. It starts with the other pups in her litter. They bite when they play fight but when one pup bites too hard the other pup will yelp loudly and stop playing. From the beginning puppies are learning the boundaries of biting and it is a lesson that needs to continue when they leave the litter to join their human family.

Biting too hard is a behavior that needs to be corrected right from the beginning if the puppy is going to be able to have good relationships with other people and dogs. Founder of The Academy For Dog Trainers Jean Donaldson published an article in 2007 for the Calgary Humane Society about aggressive behavior in canines. She educates about acquired bite inhibition (ABI) which “is the degree of pressure a dog exerts with his jaws when he bites, and likely the most significant prognostic indicator in aggression.” Puppies must be taught not to put force behind their bite because according to Donaldson “ABI has proven virtually impossible to modify in an adult dog.”

Letter from the editor: Welcome Hazel to the Paws For Reaction family

Paws For Reaction in expanding! I am proud to announce that my partner and I have welcomed Hazel- a 9 week old Saint Bernese pup- into our fur family. Hazel is an absolute joy and we love her so much- we brought her home on March 22nd! We named her after her beautiful mom who is a pure bred Saint Bernard named Noisette (French for Hazelnut) and Hazel's dad is a Bernese mountain dog named Maverick- just like Keira's dad! Hazel is going to help me launch my puppy section of Paws For Reaction!

Sadly Hazel fractured her left femur when she was really young. The signs she exhibited where walking with a limp, favoring the injured leg (or lameness,) holding the leg out straight and the inability to bend the leg at the knee or sit square. The break was un-diagnosed and the bone healed incorrectly causing Hazel to have one leg shorter than the other and walk with a limp. I have been looking forward to sharing my foray into 'pethood' with my amazing readers however raising Hazel will be a little different than raising the average puppy. I hope that by sharing Hazel's experiences on Paws For Reaction that I can help educate and prepare pet owners who are raising a puppy with a disability. I know I can't be the only one out there.

Ontario Parks: Best parks to snowshoe in Petawawa, Ontario

Petawawa is nestled between Pembroke and Chalk River in the scenic Ottawa Valley region. The Ottawa Valley is known for its Provincial Parks, white water rafting, year-round fishing, and natural resource preservation.

Once the snow hits the ground the Ottawa Valley springs back to life- headed by a diverse cross country ski and snowshoe community. Several ski and snowshoe clubs exist in Petawawa and the surrounding area and they maintain the trails every winter. Outdoor adventure is in people’s blood in the Ottawa Valley and winter exploration is welcome and celebrated.

Long Live Pets: Your rescue pet could be a star in a film for Nat Geo Wild

Best Friends Animal Society is on a mission to inspire people to change a shelter pet’s life and to celebrate rescue pets that have already found their forever home. An estimated 270,000 pets in shelters will be euthanized in March alone all due to a lack of space- almost 9,000 a day. Because of this growing epidemic CEO and co-founder of Best Friends Animal Society Gregory Castle and veterinarian and former Miss. America Dr. Debbye Turner Bell have teamed up with Natures Variety Instinct to create the Long Live Pets campaign. This effort is to help reduce the number of animal deaths in shelters across the country and to invite people to enter their rescue pets to be featured in a film for Nat Geo Wild.

Delicious or deadly: Purina responds to class action lawsuit against Beneful

The Purina pet food empire has been hit with a class action lawsuit alleging that Beneful dog food is responsible for killing thousands of dogs. Beneful has had poor reviews online for years- all one has to do is Goggle search “Beneful petitions” to see that several thousand people do in fact want the brand discontinued from Purina’s catalogue.

Beneful is one of the more popular Purina dog foods- mainly due to its very low retail price, accessibility and claims to be a “nutritious” and “balanced” dog food. However according to the Feb. 5 class action lawsuit filed in a California federal court by plaintiff Frank Lucido, Beneful causes illness and sometimes death.

Four-legged fraud: The Dogington Post uncovers service dog scam

On Feb. 16 The Doginton Post released a report titled "The Four-legged Scandal No One Is Talking About" that details the flaws in the service dog system and how it is commonly taken advantage of. People are purchasing service dog vests and collars and strapping them on their house pets so they can bring them anywhere they want. The problem has become so bad that even an iguana has been registered as a service animal. Read The Dogington Post report for a shocking look at the service dog scandal.

Pets will be able to vote in the 2016 Presidential election

Pet owners who treat their pets like people can now allow their furry family members to take part in another human activity: vote. That’s right, pet parents in the United States can now log on to PetsVoteToo.com and register their pet to vote for the 2016 President. PetsVoteToo- based out of Austin, TX- was created “to engage, amuse and inform politically-minded pet owners, and in so doing support the fund-raising efforts of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,” according to their Feb. 16 press release.

Valentine's Day doggy dangers: Chocolate is not so sweet for a canine companion

With so many holiday gift traditions including chocolate- such as Valentine’s Day- concerned pet owners are smart to be concerned for their pet's safety.
