Happy Canada Day: How to celebrate Canada Day during the global COVID-19 pandemic

Happy Canada Day: How to celebrate Canada Day during the global COVID-19 pandemic

Everything has changed since Canada- and the rest of the world- has been hit with the coronavirus pandemic. While COVID-19 positive trends are decreasing in Ottawa, it is still really important to practice social and physical distancing. This makes traditional Canada Day celebrations difficult or impossible. Many patriotic Canadians are thinking outside the box when it comes to celebrating the True North on July 1st, 2020. Here are some ways you can have a safe and healthy Canada Day during the pandemic.

Firework Safety: How to keep your pet safe during fireworks on Canada Day

It's almost Canada Day- a day to celebrate the True North while rocking your red and white, and filling up on poutine and Beaver Tails. Ottawa will not host the usual celebration on Parliament Hill this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Canadians are allowed to have small gatherings of under 10 people. There will be no big, beautiful fireworks display at the Hill, but some people may still set off backyard fireworks.

Paws For Reaction: Which Hazel are you today? Tell us in the comments!

Hazel and I decided to have some fun this weekend! Can you tell us which Hazel mood you are today? Sleepy, happy, drowning, sexy, crazy, or sad? Tell us in the blog comments, or on our Facebook page. Hazel wants to hear from you!

It's time to kick off Top Five Friday! I was trying to determine what my first topic would be, but I decided to let Hazel make the list instead. When it comes to things Hazel loves, food is at the top of her list. Here is Hazel's top five dog treats, ranked from least to most yummy! Who am I kidding, she thinks they are ALL super yummy! But I had to rank them based on how she reacts to them. I guess a better way to say it would be ranked from chews them slightly to swallows them whole!

Helping paws: Training service dogs for people with disabilities means meeting their NEADS

Helping paws: Training service dogs for people with disabilities means maintaining health

I can’t imagine my life without my dogs. They have improved my quality of life and mental health in so many ways. My dogs give me so much, but it doesn’t compare the role a service dog plays in the life of someone with disabilities. Matching a person with the right service dog is life-changing, and these dogs require expert training so they can learn to perform tasks to better assist their clients.

POSTPONED: OSPCA All 80's Trivia Night due to aMEOWzing weather

My dog Hazel is a sensitive dog. If something scares her, she's afraid of it for life. It's the strangest thing that scares her. Like fart noises. That's right, the fart noise you make with your mouth scares her enough that she turns around and runs away. Real farts have no effect on her. Traffic cones also really scare her. She was never involved with any type of traffic cone assault, but when she sees one she jumps in the air and runs away with her tail between her legs.

Book Review: A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson

Book Review: A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson Summer Reading List Paws For Reaction

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson is a thrilling young adult read that brings a cold case back to life. I will admit I had a slow start with this book. Don't get me wrong- it's a great book. But my Summer Reading List has been stacked with back to back nail biters and page-turners. Maybe it was that I'm still reeling from having just finished My Dark Vanessa by Kate Elizabeth Russell. I needed something fun and easy to digest after that book, and A Good Girl's Guide to Murder satisfied that hunger.

Does your dog use a personal floatation device? Are you looking to test the waters with a dog life preserver? Swim season means that many dog owners will be dipping their toes into stores, trying to buy the best life jacket for their dog. So what is the best life jacket for your dog? That depends on a lot of things. It depends on your dog breed, your budget, and how much time your dog spends in the water. There are lots of great life jackets for dogs. I've been searching online to try and find the best life preservers for your dog.

World Oceans Day update: The humpback whale that was spotted swimming in Montreal waters has died today

The humpback whale that was spotted swimming in Montreal waters has died today

Yesterday I posted about the humpback whale swimming in the St.Lawrence River in Montreal as part of my World Oceans Day celebration. The whale was first spotted on May 30 and as far as local marine biologists were aware, this was the first time that a humpback whale had been spotted in Montreal waters. I'm sad to report that today that same whale was found floating dead in the St. Lawrence River.

World Oceans Day: 15 ways to save the habitat of the humpback whale

Reports of a humpback whale swimming in the St.Lawrence River in Montreal stunned Canadians on May 30. CBC News reported that as far as local marine biologists were aware, this was the first time that a humpback whale had been spotted in Montreal waters. This is one of the many examples of how the COVID-19 pandemic's restrictions that are keeping waterways clearer, less cars on the road, and fewer people out in the community have positively impacted wildlife and the environment. Not only have carbon emissions been lowered, but wildlife is showing up in places where these animals haven't been seen before.

Tails on the trails: How to keep your dog safe on the hiking trail

National Trails Day June 6 Guide to safe day hiking with your dog

I love day hiking with my dogs! It’s a great way to bond with them and stay in shape. June 6 is The American Hiking Society's National Trails Day! Parks and trails are very stimulating for a dog and I find hiking in nature so relaxing. But the wilderness can be a dangerous place and it’s important to take precautions to make sure no one gets hurt- including wildlife you may encounter along the way.

Fall back in love with nature on World Environment Day: Learn how you can help preserve biodiversity

Fall back in love with nature on World Environment Day: Learn how you can help preserve biodiversity

It's hard to remember when I first fell in love with nature. I have many memories of life outdoors as a child, but it's difficult to remember which memories were the first. These memories are sprinkled throughout my childhood, far in the past, foggy but still clear. One thing I know for certain is that they all involve frogs.

We stand with you

The Paws For Reaction family cares deeply about many things- not just your pets. We want to support an inclusive society that doesn't tolerate discrimination and violence of any kind. Tomorrow, June 5 at 3:00 pm there will be a peaceful march in Ottawa to condemn the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and to honour his life. The peaceful march will begin at the United States Embassy on Sussex Drive and it will be a 10-minute walk. Anyone attending the march is asked to maintain social distancing measures and to wear a facemask. Peaceful protests are scheduled across Canada to support the black community and protest racism and police brutality.
