Paws For Reaction: For pet parents

This holiday season is going to the dogs, monkeys and the horses! December ushers in the cold of the snow and the warmth of the holidays- but did you know that there are pet holidays and awareness weeks in December? Add to the celebration by spoiling your furry family members a little more this Christmas.

December 2nd is National Mutt Day and is a day worth celebrating. Mixed breeds are often healthier and are wonderful pets. This pet holiday was initiated by the Animal Miracle Foundation as an effort to help place 10, 000 shelter dogs.

December 4th is World WildlifeConservation Day- brought to you by the WWF and the U.S. State Department in an effort to help stop wildlife crime and trafficking.

InternationalDay of Animal Rights (IARD) takes place on December 10th annually and reminds us that only we speak for those animals that don’t have voices. Promote kindness and fair treatment of animals in your community or donate your time walking dogs at your local shelter.

For those unconventional pet owners December offers National Day of the Horse on December 13th and Monkey Day on December 14th. See some exotic animals on December 27th for Visit a Zoo Day- you may even find a great Christmas gift idea in the Zoo gift shop.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) and Eukanuba host the NationalChampionship Dog Show on December 13-14, 2014. This popular show features close to 3000 dogs from over 70 countries. See your favorite dog breeds as they compete to be the best in show.

For feather-loving festive folks out there join in on the 115th Annual Audubon ChristmasBird Count that takes place December 14th to January 5th, 2014.  This bird count is the longest running Citizen Science survey in the world that includes tens of thousands of bird lovers in more than 2300 circles. Register and bird watch for a cause by recording sightings and trends.

Enjoy the festivities with your furry family members and don’t forget about those special animal themed holidays that take place in December.
