My 7 favorite Goosebumps books to read on Halloween

Reader beware, RL Stine will give you a scare!

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of the master of horror; RL Stine. I am a collector of his works and I still enjoy re-reading his books. I have a tradition; every time the power goes out we break out some candles, a flashlight, and read from a Goosebumps book out loud. Goosebumps was my favorite childhood book series until I was old enough to graduate to the scarier Fear Street novels. My huge Goosebumps collection was then passed down to my younger sister when she was old enough, almost like an heirloom or a cherished family treasure. I remember the day I found out my mom had sold all of my Goosebumps books at a yard sale. I thought I’d never forgive her! What I loved the most about a Goosebumps book was the unexpected plot twist at the end. These incredible and imaginative stories helped shape my taste in literature for the rest of my life. Goosebumps allowed my imagination to flourish and taught me that there is nothing wrong with being a little weird.

It is very hard to pick my favourite RL Stine books, but some of them just scream Halloween. This is a list of my 5 favourite Goosebumps books to read on Halloween. These are some of the most spine-chilling, scariest stories in the series to revisit. Do you want to get into the Halloween spirit? Pick up one of these at your local used book store or on Amazon.

The Haunted Mask takes place on Halloween and was so scary it spawned a sequel! It was the book RL Stine used to launch the Goosebumps TV series. Episode one is terrifying. Carly Beth gets a disturbing monster mask for Halloween, but things start to get scary when she tries to get the mask off, but it's stuck on...

Welcome to Dead House is the first book in the Goosebumps series. RL Stine's first Goosebumps book was an instant classic and is one of the best. Amanda and Josh move into a creepy, old house in Dark Falls. They are shocked when they find out Dark Falls' dark and horrifying secret...

Slappy is the most iconic character to come from any of the Goosebumps books, so iconic that he has six RL Stine books dedicated to him. Night of the Living Dummy started it all! Slappy is an evil dummy who brings tragedy, disaster, and a smile everywhere he goes. An evil smile that is, and an evil laugh...

One Day at Horrorland sounds like paradise at first. An amusement park with a spooky horror theme! I would buy a season pass! It sounds like the place to be on Halloween. But it doesn't take long to realize that these monstrous horrors are actually real, and instead of a fun-filled day, you will have a fear-filled day. Which the monsters will find entertaining, I'm sure...

If I was forced at gunpoint to choose only one Goosebumps book as my favourite then this would be it. Say Cheese and Die is a classic! A story about a killer camera- I love it! I'll never look at my Nikon the same way again! Not to mention the Goosebumps TV show episode based on this book starred a young Ryan Gosling!

It may seem like an obvious pick, but Attack of the Jack-O'-Lanterns is a truly creepy Halloween story. The pumpkin heads are so sinister and the plot twist is really unexpected. Tabitha and Lee may have scared their friends every year in the past, but this year they are the ones who will be scared...scared to death...

12 terrifying scarecrows coming right up! The Scarecrow Walks at Midnight is a tale of twists and turns; you are quite never sure who to trust. Jodie loves visiting her grandparent's farm, but this year things are different. The cornfields are bare. Her grandparents are acting very strange. And the scarecrows... Jodie swears she saw one move...
