Pet food recall: April 2014

The Robert Abady Dog Food Co., LLC RECALLS "Abady Highest Quality Maintenance & Growth Formula for Cats"

FDA PRESS RELEASE-April 18, 2014
Contact:

Consumer:
Erika Kaye
845-473-1900
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 8, 2014 - The Robert Abady Dog Food Co., LLC of Poughkeepsie, NY, is recalling its 2 lb, 5 lb & 15 lb boxes of "Abady Highest Quality Maintenance & Growth Formula for Cats" because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Bringing home the bunny: Important information for rabbit owners

They are cute and cuddly and can be fun to watch as they play and hop for hours. Rabbits are gentle, social creatures with big personalities and even bigger popularity with pet parents.
These little cuties are commonly thought of as part of the rodent family but they are in fact lagomorphs.

Pet portrait artist honors pets with beautiful and detailed paintings

Pets are like family members. They have personality, quirks and emotions. Pets are often treated just like family- they get gifts, go on vacations and end up in family photo albums. There are so many different ways that pet owners invite their animals into the family circle.

Some pet owners chose to honor their pets with a custom pet portrait. This special piece of art is both home décor and a way to show your love for that special family member. The number of talented pet portrait artists is rising and these artists are constantly raising the bar. When a client commissions a piece they are generally looking for a final product that is detailed, polished and true to their pet. California based pet portrait artist Suzanne Leonard delivers a finished product that is all that and more.

Easter inspired treats: Are eggs good snacks for pets?

Easter
is in season and painting eggs is all the rage. Don’t be fooled, eggs are more than just the pretty and decorative symbols of this spring holiday. Eggs are full of protein and nutrients that are great for people. But are eggs good for pets?
The general rule is to avoid raw egg when feeding this treat to any dog, cat or small mammal pet. Those pets all have similar reactions to uncooked egg. Some snakes and other reptiles will eat whole eggs but it is important that reptile owners do a lot of research before feeding an egg to their pet....

Easter lily deadly toxic to cats

Easter lily is a beautiful gift but is deadly for cats

Easter is a wonderful holiday to celebrate with family- pets included. Like so many other holidays the celebration can unintentionally pose a threat to a cat or dog. One common Easter gift is lethal to cats and symptoms can show up in as little as six hours.

I ASK FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN SOCIAL MEDIA BULLYING & FEAR MONGERING TO PLEASE READ & COMMENT BELOW!
There is an animal control officer in Canada who is spending his hard earned dollars in court to defend himself against a Facebook group of- well to be quite frank- bullies. Some people have signed a petition in regards to an alleged situation that they DID NOT witness. I have tried to keep quiet but I cannot- people use social media as a means to start a witch hunt. They know nothing about this m...an and how many animals he has helped. Its ignorance and I say that with no disrespect- there's nothing wrong with being ignorant, its simply a lack of knowledge. They have not witnessed anything that could provide them with a valued opinion about the ability he has to do his job. Nor has he been convicted or found guilty. Yet still some people have listened to gossip and chose to spread it further- turning it into a hatred that they don't even recognize. They are to far gone. And so they slaughter a man on Facebook and defame his name and breed more hate from the gossip. Its starting to make me sick because it happens everywhere, everyday people are using #Facebook to hurt one another. Read the news- its spilling over into real life. Do you want this man to lose his life? Someone to go 'postal' on him- or as I like to say 'go all Facebook.' I am not going to offer hatred- therefore I'm not going to name names or sell anyone out. What I will offer is insight and I hope those relying on a strangers 'word' or local gossip will take it into consideration before more victims of Facebook #bullying lose their lives.

A mix of tricks: Learn more about the highly intelligent Saint Bernese dog

Information available about training pure dog bred dogs is vast and never-ending. Which dog is the best, most intelligent and most trainable seem to be common questions. Why not mix it up and spend some time looking at a highly trainable mix breed that dog lovers may be overlooking- the Saint Bernese.
Most responsible pet owners do some breed research before they adopt and rightfully so- different lifestyles cater to different breed characteristics. The American Kennel Club (AKC) released its list of the top 10 dog breeds of 2013 and the top three dogs were repeats from the previous year- Labrador retriever, German shepherd and the golden retriever.
In the book The Intelligence of Dogs: Canine Consciousness and Capabilities author Stanley Coren came to the conclusion that the best breeds for training are the Border collie, Poodle and German shepherd. The Border collie is thought to be the most intelligent of all dog breeds according to canine dog experts worldwide.
What doesn't exist is well documented information about hybrid breeds. Some popular hybrids include the Puggle (Pug mixed with Beagle) and Labradoodle (Lab mixed with Poodle.) I own a Saint Bernese- three year old Keira.
The Saint Bernese hybrid is a mix of two mountain dogs: the Saint Bernard and the Bernese mountain dog. Both breeds have things in common and things that set them apart. According to Marc Dubé- a breeder of the Saint Bernese cross- these dogs are not only intelligent but they are extremely loyal.
Marc and his wife Sylvie own Valley Ranch Kennel, a family run dog breeding kennel specializing in giant breeds. Located in Boulter, Ontario this family has been breeding big dogs since 2002 and have a great reputation due to their high standards. He breeds pure bred Saint Bernard’s and Saint Pyrenees (Saint Bernard mixed with Great Pyrenees) and is in his third year of breeding the Saint Bernese cross.
