Hazel's life has changed so much since she moved to Ottawa and became a big city dog. One thing that has changed a lot is that we see way more people on our walks than we did in the country. Hazel gets a lot of attention, and even though people remark that she's 'such a beautiful dog,' almost everyone assumes that she's a boy. That's what prompted me to ask myself: 'how can I make my dog look more like a girl?'

I knew before I finished the first chapter that My Dark Vanessa was going to be difficult to read. At the same time, before I finished the first chapter I was sure I'd be engulfed by it. It wasn't because of the author's disclaimer at the beginning, informing the reader the events in the book were not a truth-telling of her past at boarding school or the vague mention of things in 'the news' clearly referring to the #MeToo movement. It's been a long time since I've been compelled to highlight a passage in a novel, but I found myself running a highlighter across the page, soaking the sentences that made me feel gutted in a bright colour. I could tell that Vanessa was going to crush me.

Summer on the water: Can I teach my dog to swim? (and other dog swimming safety tips)

The sun is hinting towards warmer weather and that means it’s almost time for my dogs to go swimming! Some dogs- like mine- love the water. Before taking the plunge, make sure you are prepared to take your dog swimming safely. Swimming and other water play with your dog is a great way to beat the heat and can be a bonding experience. Whether you go to a swimming destination or are just swimming in the backyard pool, safety precautions must be taken.

Summer is my favourite season! I could spend all day outside under the hot sun. Unfortunately, for my dog, that same summer sun I love can be very dangerous for her. Hazel is a Saint Bernese, and mountain dogs are not made for hot weather. Most dogs need restricted lengths of time in the sun because dogs, like people, can suffer from heatstroke and heat exhaustion.

Dear veterinary medicine community: Thank you, stay strong, and we love you

Dear veterinary medicine community: Thank you, stay strong, and we love you

This is my dog Hazel after her foreign body surgery. Two veterinarians and a team of technicians worked through their lunch- their only break in a long day of saving lives- to save my dog. Hazel's doctor took this photo and sent it to me- it was the moment she woke up. I waited for two hours but Hazel really wanted to sleep it off, so the doctor texted me this as soon as she was awake. Her name is Dr. Paquette, and she's incredible. I'm not sure I really expressed to all of them how grateful I was. The cost of losing Hazel may have meant losing myself. It was worth every penny, and I can never repay them. I got the full value fo their service- I got to keep my best friend. So Thank you.

Lisa Jewell is the author to watch in the coming years and like her other works, The Family Upstairs did not disappoint. This book is like Flowers in the Attic meets the Jonestown cult- but in London. Jewell's story uncovers a dark family history, chapter by chapter, as told by the three main characters.
World Bee Day: With bee populations at risk, how can you help protect the bees?

With murder hornets in the news, bees are all the buzz in 2020. Bees are important players in our eco-system. They're hardworking pollinators that have a huge impact on our food supply. Unfortunately, with biodiversity being compromised, bees are being threatened by human activity. The way we live is causing a decline in many bee species- but there are things we can do to change this.

The United Nations designated May 20th World Bee Day. The date was selected because it "coincides with the birthday of Anton JanÅ¡a, who in the 18th century pioneered modern beekeeping techniques in his native Slovenia."

In denial: The unfortunate truth about fleas you may be ignoring

Alright, pet parents- are you ready to hate me? Because I’m about to tell you something that I have told many pet parents in the past and to my surprise, it almost always elicits a furious or begrudging reaction. I’m about to talk about fleas right now so grab your pitchforks and torches.

Spring safety 10 common flowers that are toxic to dogs

It seems as though the warmer weather is finally here to stay. The sun is shining. Beautiful spring flowers are blooming. Your dog explores the world with its nose. Unfortunately, a dog's nose can lead them to dangerous things. Flowers that are beautiful to us can be toxic to your dog. These are 10 common flowers that are toxic to dogs. If your dog ingests any of these plants, call your veterinarian immediately.

COVID-19 and your pet: What Ontario's 'stage one' reopening plan means for veterinary care and pet services

COVID-19 and your pet: What Ontario's 'stage one' reopening plan means for veterinary care and pet services

After yesterday's press briefing by Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced the changes to restrictions on veterinary care, pet grooming, and animal boarding, many animal hospitals and pet service telephones rang off the hook. The community is ready to get back to business as usual when it comes to their pets. There's just one problem: most pet services are not ready. They were watching at the same time as the general public.

Endangered Species Day: Extirpated species in Ontario and what you can do to help

Endangered Species Day: Extirpated species in Ontario and what you can do to help
By Stacey McIntyre-Gonzalez

Ontario has many endangered, threatened, special concern and extirpated animals and plants that need special consideration on Endangered Species Day. I've celebrated this in awareness day in the past. Sometimes we can be less concerned about animals we've never seen before. The term endangered species often makes people think of Beluga whales, Polar Bears, wolves, and other mammals that get a lot of publicity. Cute, furry animals that we're familiar with. Or ferocious predators. Birds, bugs, and slimy species aren't on our radar. We see more wolves and polar bears used in awareness campaigns than we do the Karner Blue butterfly. It's one of the four extirpated insect species in Ontario. There are 23 bugs on Ontario's list of insects at risk- and the Karner Blue is one of the most striking of them all. This butterfly used to be widespread in Toronto, London, and Sarnia until habitat loss resulted in a huge decline in the species.

Book Review: One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

Paws For Reaction Book Review One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

Described as The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One of Us is Lying serves up exactly that: a soapy young adult mystery soaked in teen angst, juicy gossip, and teen movie stereotypes. I read this book in three days- and it's long for a YA novel. Each of the four main characters narrates the book, which moves the story along quickly. In a lot of ways, this is your average YA novel, but that doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it. If it was a Netflix TV show I would have binge-watched it in one day.

COVID-19 and your pet: How your pet keeps you healthy during a pandemic

COVID-19 and your pet How your pet keeps you healthy during a pandemic Paws For Reaction

The COVID-19 crisis has put mental health under the microscope and many are trying to find ways to preserve their mental health during this time of self-isolation and social distancing. Countless studies have been conducted to determine a pet’s influence on a person’s mental health. Research has shown that pets can do all sorts of things to improve their owner’s physical and mental health. Some pets assist people with disabilities while others soothe people suffering from depression.

Spread the love: Thank a nurse for International Nurse Day

May 12 is International Nurse Day Paws For Reaction Covid-19

The importance of nurses is impossible to deny and this year on International Nurse Day I want to give an extra special thank you to nurses worldwide who are working tirelessly to protect us during the Covid-19 crisis. Nurses have been one of the hardest working and most impacted essential workers during the pandemic. They work long hours trying to keep our community safe and healthy. They are in clinics, hospitals, and long-term care facilities setting their fear aside and facing the pandemic selflessly and caring for people compassionately.

COVID-19 and your pet: Can my dog get COVID-19 coronavirus?

COVID-19 and your pet: Can my dog get COVID-19 coronavirus?

Dog owners want answers. Can my dog get the COVID-19 coronavirus? Can my dog give me the COVID-19 coronavirus? As I shared in an earlier post, according to the World Health Organization's (WHO) Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, a dog in Hong Kong has tested positive for COVID-19. When I posted that, there was still a lot about COVID-19 and pets that we didn't know. But what's happened since then? Have there been any more dogs that tested positive for COVID-19? In total, how many dogs have tested positive for COVID-19? What happened to the dogs that tested positive for COVID-19?

Pandemic puppies The downside of adopting a puppy during the COVID-19 crisis Paws For Reaction

You're home from work with extra time on your hands. This must be the perfect time to get a puppy right? The demand for puppies is high during the COVID-19 pandemic- so high that the media has dubbed the term 'pandemic puppies.' While having the free time to welcome a new pet in the home seems ideal, there are a few ways that these pandemic puppies could come back to bite you.

Happy Mother's Day: Why I love being a dog mom Paws For Reaction

As many of you know I'm a very lucky dog mom to Hazel and Keira, my two Saint Bernese mountain dogs. While Keira isn't living with me right now, I feel very fortunate to have both of my loving dogs in my life. I don't think I could make it through each day without my fur-babies.

National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day: How to dog-proof your backyard

This post contains affiliate links

To your dog, the backyard is a safe space- the canine equivalent of a bedroom. It's a place to play, relax, and feel at home. Dogs don't associate the backyard with danger. Sadly, dogs have ended up in the emergency room, falling victim to something that was in their own backyard. Disasters can happen anywhere, and National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day is a great reminder to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. That's why it's so important to dog-proof the backyard using these tips!

COVID-19 and your pet: Ottawa re-opens parks but not off-leash dog parks

COVID-19 and your pet: Ottawa re-opens parks but not off-leash dog parks

Ottawa has officially re-opened parks and green spaces in the city as the first phases of the loosening of COVID-19 restrictions take effect. Dog parks, playgrounds, and sportsfields, however, remain closed. Ottawa is easing restrictions, but many dog owners are finding it difficult to be so limited when it comes to finding safe places where they can exercise their dogs outdoors. Many parks in Ottawa prohibit dogs from entering, so community members rely on dog-friendly parks for their pets.

Scratching the surface: Does my dog have a food allergy? What do I do?

Itching and scratching Does my dog have a food allergy Paws For Reaction Saint Bernese

It's always been my worst fear: my dog develops allergies. Allergies may seem like no big deal but for many dogs, allergies are difficult to manage. But what about food allergies? There is a lot of misinformation about food allergies in dogs. I'm going to help you scratch the surface and uncover the truth about pet food allergies. Let's get started!

Book Review: Sin Eater by Megan Campisi

How does Megan Campisi carry a novel with a main character who is unable to speak for 90% of the book? By using dark imagery and tense conflict to tell an age-old story that still rings true today. Sin Eater dines on the topics of sexism and classism by bringing to life an alternate Elizabethan society that feasts on the flesh of the female spirit.

Product Review: Dish Towels by Robbie Craig's Northern Projects

Paws For Reaction product review Robbie Craig Northern Projects Canada

I've been a big fan of Robbie Craig's artwork since I first discovered his nature-inspired creations on Facebook a few years ago. Craig's artwork is "inspired by the untouched and rugged landscape of Canada’s north and captures the essence of Canada's beauty in his own unique style." Craig, located in the Northwest Territories, creates wildlife and landscape artwork with a very distinct Canadian style. I love his use of lines and colour, and how he captures the spirit of the animals he brings to life in his work. He doesn't just create his art to hang on the wall, he also has other products available with his personal Canuck touch.

Dealing with a doggy disability: Happy National Specially-abled Pets Day

Paws For Reaction National Specially-abled Pets Day Saint Bernese

May 3rd is a special day for pet owners like me who own a pet with a disability. It's a day to celebrate the reasons that make our pets unique and one of a kind. Today is National Specially-abled Pets Day! My dog Hazel is a 5-year-old Saint Bernese who has been dealing with her disability her entire life. She had a broken femur when she was just a puppy. The injury went undiagnosed and the bone fused together, causing one of her legs to be shorter than the other. She will always walk with a limp as a result. It was the first of many health problems that Hazel has had in her lifetime, but she's taken it in stride. Despite all of her ailments, she is an extremely happy dog.

Hanging with Hazel: What it's like to be a big city dog

Ottawa Saint Bernese dog

You all know me- I'm Hazel. But I'm not the same Hazel I was before. I've changed. I'm a big city dog now. So many things are different for a big city dog, did you know that? I get to meet so many people and they all want to pet me. Mum says I can't let too many people pet me because of the rona. I don't know what a rona is, but mum says we can't do lots of things because of the rona, so I don't like it much.
