Oct. 1st marks the beginning of American Humane Association’s Adopt a Dog Month and a growing number of shelters across America are educating the public on the benefits of rescuing. Although adoption is the goal there are many ways in which concerned dog lovers can help out without adopting.
Adopting a dog from a shelter ensures that pet parents will get a healthy pet. This is just one of the many benefits that the Humane Society lists when it comes to rescued pets.

KONG® silent recall of dog treat has consumers questioning the brand's integrity
The Dog Food Advisor (DFA) has announced a recall of KONG® Aussie Sticks for dogs due to possible contamination with mould. Although the DFA reported the recall on Sept. 25 no release by the manufacturer of the product has been made available to the public.
The manufacturer of the chew treat JAKKS Pacific- based in Walnut, California- has yet to issue a release informing customers of specific details about where the product was sold such as store locations or online distribution. The recall of the KONG® Aussie Sticks appears to be a "silent recall."

Onrey’s life may have not started out on a happy note but
his new family are making sure that every day that he spends with them is full
of love and light. He won the dog lottery when he found his forever home and
has finally been given the life he deserves.
Onrey was about a year old when his family rescued him
from Rescue Farm in Spencer, Indiana on July 23, 2012. This Bichon Frise was
malnourished when he was discovered and brought to the shelter for
rehabilitation. Onrey had never been groomed and didn’t even know how to play
with a toy. His family taught him how to love and trust. They demonstrated to
him how to play and his heart began to open.

FEMA advises public to prepare pets for natural disaster
American families may be prepared for a natural disaster but are their
pets ready? September is National Preparedness Month sponsored by the United
States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and
the organization is urging the public to prepare in advance for all types of
natural disasters.
“You should do the basics to prepare for hurricanes or any other type of
disaster – be informed, make a plan, build a kit and get involved,” FEMA Region
6 Administrator Tony Robinson said in a September 8 press release. “We
encourage you to take things one step further and make sure you are financially
ready too.”

While some parents may be excited to send their kids back to school canine companions may not be so willing to lose the company. When summer's spent frolicking together are suddenly over and the kids start riding the bus again some dogs begin to suffer from a common ailment among pets in America.
In a September 3rd report by Sue Manning of The Associated Press, Dr. Nick Dodman of Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts states that nearly 20 per cent of the United States’ 80 million dogs suffer from separation anxiety.
It is something familiar to the many pet parents with full time jobs. However after months of companionship with the kids on summer break dogs get into a routine that is hard to break. This stress and anxiety can lead to destruction and bad behavior.
