Summer Reading List: Church of Marvels by Leslie Parry

This post contains affiliate links

I was inspired to pick up Church of Marvels by Leslie Parry because I read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, and I was desperately craving something with that circus and carnival theme. Something magical and creepy. This book is very different, but just as engrossing. Plus it made it on the Lit Thursday list on Lenny Letter. Did you read it? What did you think? Let me know in the comments!

Product Review: Crofters Organic Jam is Ontario Made, NonGMO & is Saving Bees!
It's time for a change...

Crofters made its way into my kitchen when my fiancé Robert picked up their  Wild Blueberry Premium Spread at our local grocery store. He knows how important organic and non-GMO foods are to me, and wanted a way to sneak bread back into our diet...a way that I would approve of. He knew I would be too excited about a new non-GMO product to care that it also entered our kitchen with a bag of carbo-loaded English muffins.

Insider tips: How to get your dog or cat to take their medication

You just got home from a visit with your veterinarian and in front of you are two things: Fluffy and a vial full of pills. Your vet has told you that if Fluffy is going to get healthy, she needs to take her medication. I know what you are thinking "She wont take that! I can't pill my pet!" You may be right- your pet may not want to willingly take a tablet. You may need to try a few times, or get creative. Not everyone nails it on the first try. Most pet owners will visit their veterinarian at least once a year, and occasionally have to give a dog or cat pill form medication. I have learned a trick or two from fellow pet owners and veterinary professionals. Here are some of my tips for a pet owner trying to give a dog or cat a pill.

Shout out: Greta's Organic Gardens

Hey Paws peeps, I want to give a shout out to Greta's Organic Gardens. I purchased my seed exclusively from Greta this year at the Ottawa Valley Seedy Sunday event. Greta's seeds are organic and non-GMO.

Every year we plant an eight foot vegetable garden and it grows very well here in Ontario, Canada. A lot of Greta's seed is heirloom seed, harvested locally by organic farmers and passed down from generation to generation. Our garden now belongs to that historical network of farmers who are trying to preserve our organic agriculture.

For me, planting a garden is not just a way to save money at harvest time, it is also great for the environment and fights against large agribusiness farms and their unethical practices. Even a small garden in your backyard can make a positive impact the environment. Over the next few months as my garden sprouts and grows, I will be sharing with my readers some of the organic and non-GMO products I love, as well as some local food from farmers in our area. How does this relate to pets? Bettering our environment positively affects every aspect of our lives- including our pets!

Puppy pain management: 7 tips to help a dog in chronic pain

In March of 2015 my fiancé and I brought home Hazel, a 10 week old Saint-Bernese puppy. It was apparent right away that something was wrong when I discovered that Hazel couldn't bend her right, hind leg. When I tried to do a basic mobility test with her leg she growled and snapped at me. The next morning I rushed her to the Pembroke Animal Hospital and was shocked to discover that she had a broken femur very early on in life that had went undiagnosed. The bone had callused together incorrectly, making one leg shorter than the other. Her leg no longer had a natural bend at the knee, and her hips were displaced. This was the beginning of our long walk down the road to puppy pain management. It has been more than a year since that bitter sweet day, and I have learned a lot. Here are my top seven tips for a pet owner who is dealing with a pet with chronic pain.

The poster and the politician: Alan Tobin  "delighted" about breed specific restrictions at the dog park, Ireland

Pet parents are outraged. Councillor Alan Tobin is receiving serious backlash after posting his views on the new posters for the dog park that list restricted breeds. The County Councillor of Meath, Ashbourne in Ireland  stated in his Facebook post that he is "delighted" to get the signs that he had asked for, and that is amazes him that "some people think these are ideal family pets."

Dogs on the list include American Bull Terrier, Bull Mastiff, Staffordshier Bull Terrier, German Shepherd, Japanese Akita, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Doberman Pinscher, Rottweiler, English Bull Terrier and Japanese Tosa. Most Facebook users are outraged, and the post has over 140, 000 shares and over 240, 000 comments. While most people are in opposition to Tobin's poster there are comments from people who agree with him. Breeds that bite has been a great debate among pet owners, most veterinary and canine research organizations take a similar stance on the breed bite: the main focus should be on responsible pet ownership, not breed.
