FEMA advises public to prepare pets for natural disaster

American families may be prepared for a natural disaster but are their pets ready? September is National Preparedness Month sponsored by the United States Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the organization is urging the public to prepare in advance for all types of natural disasters.

“You should do the basics to prepare for hurricanes or any other type of disaster – be informed, make a plan, build a kit and get involved,” FEMA Region 6 Administrator Tony Robinson said in a September 8 press release. “We encourage you to take things one step further and make sure you are financially ready too.”

How to ease your dog’s separation anxiety linked to back to school

While some parents may be excited to send their kids back to school canine companions may not be so willing to lose the company. When summer's spent frolicking together are suddenly over and the kids start riding the bus again some dogs begin to suffer from a common ailment among pets in America.

In a September 3rd report by Sue Manning of The Associated Press, Dr. Nick Dodman of Tufts University’s Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts states that nearly 20 per cent of the United States’ 80 million dogs suffer from separation anxiety.

It is something familiar to the many pet parents with full time jobs. However after months of companionship with the kids on summer break dogs get into a routine that is hard to break. This stress and anxiety can lead to destruction and bad behavior.

Pet food recall: August 2014

Recall expanded: PEDIGREE® Adult Complete Nutrition Limited Recall Due to Metal Fragments

Contact:
Consumer:
1-800-305-5206

Press release - August 31, 2014 - At PEDIGREE®, we care about all dogs and their safety and well-being is extremely important to us, and to our mission – to make a Better World for Pets. For that reason, we have announced the extension of a previous voluntary recall of PEDIGREE® Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food products due to the possible presence of foreign material. The voluntary recall still affects 22 bags shipped to Dollar General across four U.S. states, but it now is being expanded to 55-pound bags of PEDIGREE® Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food products sold in Sam's Club in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.

This recall is being expanded to Sam's Club in the U.S. because some of the affected production lot was originally said to be held in inventory but was instead released to consumers, which has necessitated the expansion of the recall. We are confident no other packages or retailers are affected by this recall.

There are quite a few felines with pedigree but the most popular breed of these fancy cats is the Persian.

Eragon Photo via Petfinder.com
Adoptable of the Week: Eragon

Meet Eragon! Eragon is a courtesy listing on Petfinder.com from the Friendly Giants Dog Rescue in Ottawa. Eragon has been waiting a long time for the right forever home. He is a large, adult nuetered Kuvasz who is very laid back and slow moving for the most part but can also have fun and be energetic. Eragon comes with special needs but with a patient and dedicated owner he would be a great pet. Eragon suffers from seasonal allergies- like many dogs with white fur. He takes Evening Primrose every day to try to prevent the urge to lick and chew his paws. Eragon is a true Kuvasz to the core and would be best suited with a dominant owner who has experience with large breed working dogs. Kuvasz are bred to guard their flock or home and Eragon- like most Kuvasz- guards all sorts of things. Because of this he is not suited for a home with young children and would flourish on a farm in a fenced in area where he can guard his family. Eragon enjoys being groomed and doesn’t resist when having his nails trimmed. He has an independent nature but still enjoys affection and positive reinforcement training is a must with this dog. Eragon needs the right person to take a chance on him and give him the structure and care he so desperately desires.

If you are interested in learning more about Eragon contact the Keshet Rescue at dmoffat@keshetinc.com or call 613-822-7266. Click here to view Eragon’s page on Petfinder.com

Meet Luke! Luke is a beautiful, young Russian blue mix. He is believed to be around 7 months old. This adorable boy not only has good looks but he is sweet, snuggly and irresistibly charming. He would do best with an owner that loves giving affection and cuddling the days away. He even likes giving kisses! Luke needs a stable home where he can spend time indoors with his family. If you are interested in learning more about Luke contact the Lanark Animal Welfare Society of Smiths Falls at shelter@lanarkanimals.ca or call 613-283-9308. According to past research the two most intelligent dog breeds are the Border collie and the Poodle. The least intelligent breeds are reportedly the Afghan hound and the Basenji.

Viva Photo via Petfinder.com
Adoptable of the Week: Viva

Meet Viva! Viva is a beautiful senior Pointer who is in need of a second chance from a calm and loving family. This gentle, nine year old girl spent the majority of her life living in a crate. She had little contact with people and no idea what a structured family life could be like. Fortunately Viva was given a second chance when she was rescued by New Beginnings Pet Rescue in Ottawa, Ontario. Viva is now discovering the joy that humans can bring to her life and is enjoying basic obedience training, hikes and this new found affection. Although she is still timid- a result of her previous upbringing- Viva wants to be loved and to share her love with people. She needs a pet parent that is patient and gentle- someone to help her build back her confidence and allow her to be a dog. Viva is frightened by loud noises but tolerates the sounds of children playing. Due to her aversion of loud noises Viva would be happiest away from big, booming cities and noisy traffic. She needs a calm family who can mirror her energy level. The ideal happy ending for Viva would be a senior couple who live in the country and would take her on long hikes until she was tired and ready to go to sleep beside the fireplace. Viva is fixed and vaccinated and gets along with cats and calmer dogs. If you are interested in learning more about Viva fill out an application through New Beginnings Pet Rescue. Click here to view Viva’s page on Petfinder.com

You may hear a cat hiss or spit at another animal and that’s normal. But a cat only uses its meow to communicate with humans.

Here is a great training tip- dogs are more likely to learn verbal commands if you pair them with a hand signal or a gesture.

Techno a Go-Go: This innovative electronic dog toy promotes fitness and fun

Imagine a future where your dog can use technology for entertainment just like you do. Now stop imagining because that future is taking place right now at a dog park or backyard near you. Just like many people own gaming consoles or handheld gaming devices your dog can also play with its own electronic game- if you can fit it in the budget.
The Go-Go Dog Pal is an interactive device that can be used as a game, training tool or a way for your dog to release some energy. This remote control dog toy is shaped in a way that a dog cannot puncture it or get a firm hold onto it. Each Go-Go Dog Pal has a lightweight but durable plastic outer shell decorated like a cartoon woodchuck, raccoon or skunk- making it an innovative and adorable source of entertainment.
