Pet of the Month July 2013: Baby and her pet parent have a special bond

All photos by Jessy
Meet Bracken- or Baby as she is lovingly referred to. Baby may be small for a Bernese mountain dog but her heart is ten times her size. Despite all odds and regardless of what the world throws at them, Baby and her pet parent Jessy enjoy life together with a positive outlook and a whole lot of ‘puppy’ love.

Baby has a rough start to her life. When Baby was adopted from her breeder she had the Parvo virus, which can be deadly for dogs- especially puppies. Baby spent a lot of time in the veterinary hospital trying to recover so she could be in her forever home. It took a lot of time and a lot more love from her family to get Baby to where she is today.

Employee fired from Kemptville Wal-mart after trying to help a dog in a car on a hot day

Photo by deepwarren Foter CC BY-NC-SA

Does being a Good Samaritan pay off? For Carla Cheney, a former employee of Wal-mart in Kemptville, Ontario it did not seem like it. On July 10, 2013 Cheney was fired from Wal-mart after she confronted a customer for leaving a dog in his truck.
The reason for Cheney being fired is that she was allegedly rude to the customer.
Cheney had just a week prior called the SPCA on a customer who had left a dog in their vehicle. She had witnessed it along side her manager. When she asked her manager what she should do her manager advised her that it was none of her business and went inside the store.

On Tuesday Cheney witnessed another dog being left in a vehicle and the former Wal-mart pharmacy technician took action.

Cheney stated to CBC News that she hadn’t started her shift yet and was in fact in plain clothes and not wearing her Wal-mart vest. Cheney was sitting at a table with some fellow employees outside of the Kemptville Wal-mart when she witnessed the customer leaving his dog in a parked truck.

June brings sunshine and love for pets of the past and present

Photo by kaibara87 Foter.com CC BY

June 3, 2013- The month of June not only brings sunshine and summertime but it also raises awareness for shelter cats and celebrates our animal companions- living and dead.

June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month and is intended to raise awareness about the joy of rescuing a cat from a shelter. There are so many loving, affectionate cats in shelters right now just waiting to find a forever home...

Gentle Giant: Saint Bernard was once a hospice dog but is now a giant companion

Saint Bernard dog breed info
Photo by Pipistrula Foter.com CC BY NC SA

The gentle and quiet Saint Bernard may not have had an official name until the 1880s, but it's now one of the most popular giant dog breeds. The Saint's droopy face has drooled its way into the hearts of pet owners worldwide.

Saint Bernard is the dog definition of a gentle giant. On average this decedent of the Mastiff weighs 110 pounds- but both males and females have been known to weigh in at 200 pounds. Hazel's mother, a purebred Saint Bernard names Noisette, which means Hazelnut in French weighed around 150lbs. This gigantic pet belongs to the working group of dogs and like its Bernese Mountain Dog neighbor, it was used for draft work in the past. Saint Bernard is most known for its work as a search and rescue dog. It has a sacred past- which is how the breed finally got its official name in 1880.
Hey Paws peeps- Keira needs your help!
My name is Keira and I'm a contestant in the Petcurean Savour the Moment Contest. I could win free Petcurean dog food for a year! That's my favourite food! My mommy and daddy could win cool stuff but what I'd be most excited about is being a spokes dog for Petcurean! But I'm having a hard time getting my two-legged friends to vote for me. So I'm reaching out to get some votes.

How to vote:
-Follow the link http://bit.ly/12CyGYu
-Like Petcurean's page: Petcurean is the leading Canadian holistic pet food that includes the pet foods Go!, Now Fresh and Summit. It is one of the last privately owned Canadian pet food companies and is committed to serving only the best to your pet.
-Visit the Savour the Moment contest page and click on View Gallery.
-You can view Keira and her profile in the Gallery; shown is the above photo.
-Facebook will ask you for certain Access to your Account. ALL THIS MEANS is that Facebook needs to create a SHARE link to post to your Timeline and in doing so it must Access your account to find your Wall and make a Post on your Timeline. It will not view passwords, information, or post on your behalf when you do not allow it to. There is no spam. You can even chose not to share it on your Timeline.
-You are able to vote once every 24 hours. Keira needs your votes!

More about me- Keira!
I am a two year old Saint Bernard/ Bernese Mountain Dog mix. I am quiet and very well behaved so my parents reward me for that all the time with lots of outdoor adventures. I am really good at hiking, swimming and climbing steep hills. I love to jump over things and run real fast. I was rescued from a shelter from my first mommy but she ran into tough times. So she found me another mommy and daddy and they told me they will keep me forever. Its okay though- I love everyone and I'm always happy as long as I have a family. I really want to win to show other doggies that even though your in a shelter there is a family out there that is perfect for you and that will love you. Just like my mommy and daddy love me!

Keira's favourite things:
-playing with the ball
-squeaking her ball
-playing hide and seek, especially the seeking -going in the water
-going in the water when mommy and daddy say not to
-doing my tricks; high five, playing dead, rolling over. I can do anything!
-Rolling in poop (unfortunate for my two leggeds)
-snuggles and kisses
-spreading my love around and just being a dog, a really good dog.

Bath time blues

Kickin' it in the wetlands

Mommy and daddy gave me a job!

I love the water! This was my first time at the cottage and I can't wait to go back!

Sometimes I roll in dirty stuff...then I have to have bath time.

But I guess bath time is not so bad- it does make me look extra pretty!

This is what I do when mommy works on the computer- I'm doing in right now!

Daddy can't get away with not giving me belly rubs when he lays with me on my bed.

I play air guitar too! I'm so talented!

 Sometimes I squish mommy...

...but I'm so cute she doesn't mind!

I love affection almost as much as...

...I love impressing people with my skills- I'm pretty good at playing dead, rolling over and high fives!

I always make sure I shake off near mommy on warm days to make sure she stays cool.

My zombie is the first toy my mommy and daddy gave me. Its my favourite. I sleep with it on the comfy bed with me until its time for me to sneak into mommy and daddy's bed. I know I'm not supposed to but they never seem to mind because they love me so much.

The month of May features many pet related holidays and awareness weeks

Photo by Cia de Foto Foter.com CC BY

The first week of May is National Pet Week making May just as much fun as April was for pet parents. The month of May pays tribute to our furry family members with many pet related holidays and awareness weeks.

Spend some extra time snuggling up with your pets for the second week of May which is Be Kind to Animals Week. Some pet parents are making donations to humane societies and animal rescue shelters to raise awareness for the ethical treatment of animals. Don’t forget to donate to charities that train, foster and support service dogs. And don’t forget never to pet a service dog or a service dog in training.

PRESS RELEASE
By Mike Sagman via Dog Food Advisor

April 30, 2013 – Great Life Performance Pet Products has notified its distributors to request they withhold certain products from sale to consumers.
According to the company, the action is being taken because some packages are “not reaching full expiration date” as suggested by the presence of an unexplained odor.
The affected dog food products include:
§  Great Life Grain Free Buffalo
§  Dr. E’s Grain Free Buffalo
In its letter, Great Life assures distributors recent lab tests have found their Grain Free Buffalo products “free of Salmonella, E. coli, toxins, micro-toxins, etc.”.
Our Opinion
Although Great Life is investigating the cause of the problem, it’s important to note the company has not yet technically classified its action “a recall”.
However, it’s always possible some of the affected product may have already made its way to end users.
Since the company has not yet determined the actual cause of the odor, we feel compelled to make consumers aware of the situation and suggest they monitor the developing story closely.

Summer activity guide: what you need to know before swimming with your dog

Internal Server Error Foter.com CC BY-NC-ND
With the summer months soon approaching pet parents are getting excited for some fun in the sun with their canine companions. When the weather gets hot you may be tempted to take a dip with your dog but before you take the plunge make sure you know your safety rules- and know your pet.

Swimming and other water play with your dog can be a bonding experience for you both. It can also keep both you and your dog in shape and provide relief from the hot summer sun. Whether you go to a swimming destination or are just swimming in the backyard pool it’s better to be safe than sorry.
