Subject: Urgent Need for Action on Online Misinformation and Disinformation
Dear [MP’s Name],
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you and your colleagues in Parliament to prioritize the growing threat of online misinformation and disinformation- an issue that is increasingly undermining our democracy, public trust, and social cohesion. This issue permeates social media, podcasts, blogs, and websites that claim to be reporting the news. Online misinformation and disinformation are a public health and safety risk, and not only does our government not take it seriously enough, but some members of our government participate in it by sharing misinformation and disinformation and/or by being intellectually dishonest with their constituents and the general public.
The digital age has brought undeniable benefits, but it has also made it easier than ever for false and misleading information to spread at an unprecedented scale and speed. Whether it’s deceptive content around elections, public health, or global conflicts, misinformation not only distorts facts- it erodes citizens’ ability to make informed decisions, fosters polarization, and diminishes confidence in democratic institutions. It also upholds oppressive systems and causes harm to marginalized communities, as abusive rhetoric often goes unchecked and uncorrected.
We have already witnessed how coordinated disinformation campaigns- both foreign and domestic- can destabilize societies, influence electoral outcomes, and fuel division. As other democracies around the world are taking strong steps to tackle this threat, Canada must not fall behind. We need clear policies that:
-Support independent, fact-based journalism;
-Increase transparency and accountability for social media platforms;
-Strengthen digital media literacy education for all ages;
-Enhance regulatory oversight to limit the spread of harmful false content.
-Addressing this challenge requires a collaborative, non-partisan approach that balances the protection of free expression with the need to defend truth and democratic integrity.
We also need a Canadian alternative to American-owned and controlled social media companies, but in creating this, we need to be mindful of not producing a copycat system that becomes an oligopoly with platforms owned by billionaires with their own malicious agendas.
I respectfully ask that you raise this issue within Parliament and advocate for decisive government action to confront the threat of online misinformation and disinformation. Our democracy depends on it.
Thank you for your time and service.
Sincerely,
