As the sun starts to set on the summer we pay tribute to the pets that have graced our lives by celebrating these pet related holidays and raising awareness for animal welfare.
This August has had its ups and downs
with a mix of tremendous storms and sticky-hot days keeping us forever on our
toes. But all storms aside, service dogs had a great month celebrating

A dog lost in the woods is a pet parent’s worst nightmare. Finding a lost pet can be difficult but imagine being far from home- unable to fight on the front lines to find your pet and bring her home safely.
That is what Specialist Jon Kenneth Walker- an aviation mechanic and service member in the Maryland Army National Guard- has endured. Jon’s dog Zara went missing on July 28th 2014 in Crownsville, Maryland while he was deployed in Kuwait. Now Jon is back home but still no sign of his girl Zara.
"I am currently back in the United States and got back just a few short days ago," Jon said in an August 19th correspondence. “I was activated to active duty and began my deployment last October and spent the majority of my time while deployed in Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan."

August 13, 2014- The question in the tiny town of Cormorant, Minnesota isn't “who let the dogs out?” The question is who let the dogs in- to politics that is.
Minnesota politics is not without other strange occurrences- 5-year old Bobby Tufts recently finishing up a two year turn as mayor of Dorset, Minnesota. However the public was shocked to find out that Cormorant residents had elected a dog as their first mayor.

Eragon Photo via Petfinder.com |
Adoptable of the Week: Eragon
Meet Eragon! Eragon is a courtesy
listing on Petfinder.com from the Friendly Giants Dog Rescue in Ottawa. Eragon
has been waiting a long time for the right forever home. He is a large,
adult nuetered Kuvasz who is very laid back and slow moving for the most part but can also
have fun and be energetic. Eragon comes with special needs but with a patient
and dedicated owner he would be a great pet. Eragon suffers from seasonal
allergies- like many dogs with white fur. He takes Evening Primrose every day
to try to prevent the urge to lick and chew his paws. Eragon is a true Kuvasz
to the core and would be best suited with a dominant owner who has experience
with large breed working dogs. Kuvasz are bred to guard their flock or home and
Eragon- like most Kuvasz- guards all sorts of things. Because of this he is not
suited for a home with young children and would flourish on a farm in a fenced in
area where he can guard his family. Eragon enjoys being groomed and doesn’t resist
when having his nails trimmed. He has an independent nature but still enjoys
affection and positive reinforcement training is a must with this dog. Eragon
needs the right person to take a chance on him and give him the structure and
care he so desperately desires.

It was an age old question that has plagued men
for decades; furrowing the brow and inducing the sweat as they desperately try to
find the answer in time.
“What do I get my wife for her birthday?”
Darrin Wilson was one of those men struggling
to find that perfect birthday surprise for his wife Janet. While contemplating
the question he looked over at their dog Angus- a mini Boston terrier rescue-
and it just clicked. Darrin decided to make a toy that looked just like Angus
and give it to Janet for her birthday. He had no idea that a loving gesture
would touch both of their lives in such an unforeseen and wonderful way.
Darrin made the Boston terrier in the downward
dog pose- a tribute to Angus’ favorite stretching position. He branded the toy Wugadog gave it to Janet and she absolutely
adored her custom made Angus toy.
“I opened the box and saw that the toy was in
the downward dog position and I laughed. I knew that it was Angus right away and
wanted to show it to everyone,” Janet said in a correspondence.

Viva Photo via Petfinder.com |
Adoptable of the Week: Viva
Meet Viva! Viva is a beautiful senior Pointer who is in need of a
second chance from a calm and loving family. This gentle, nine year old girl
spent the majority of her life living in a crate. She had little contact with
people and no idea what a structured family life could be like. Fortunately
Viva was given a second chance when she was rescued by New Beginnings Pet Rescue in Ottawa, Ontario. Viva is now discovering the joy that humans can bring
to her life and is enjoying basic obedience training, hikes and this new found
affection. Although she is still timid- a result of her previous upbringing-
Viva wants to be loved and to share her love with people. She needs a pet
parent that is patient and gentle- someone to help her build back her
confidence and allow her to be a dog. Viva is frightened by loud noises but
tolerates the sounds of children playing. Due to her aversion of loud noises
Viva would be happiest away from big, booming cities and noisy traffic. She
needs a calm family who can mirror her energy level. The ideal happy ending for
Viva would be a senior couple who live in the country and would take her on
long hikes until she was tired and ready to go to sleep beside the fireplace.
Viva is fixed and vaccinated and gets along with cats and calmer dogs. If you are interested in learning more about Viva fill
out an application through New Beginnings Pet Rescue. Click here to view Viva’s page on Petfinder.com
